Tollens’ oxidizes the aldehyde group into a carboxylate group, and also forms a silver metal precipitate.
                            O
                            ||
Benzaldehyde: Ph−C−H
                              O
                               ||
Benzoate anion: Ph−C−O(−) + Ag↓

Note that ketones cannot be oxidized into carboxylate. This is what makes Tollens’ useful: it lets us tell the difference between ketones and aldehydes.
